perla batalla
Simply put, Grammy nominated vocalist,
composer and arranger Perla Batalla has one of the most
breathtaking voices on planet Earth. The Grammy nominated world
vocalist has been enchanting audiences throughout the world in
venues like UCLA's Royce Hall, Kennedy Center and The Sydney
Opera House. Batalla first gained attention as a backup singer
for Leonard Cohen and K.D. Lang. Her transcendent, gemlike voice
and unique, worldly-flavored soulful style possess a striking
balance between folk-pop and the rhythmic textures of Latin and
indigenous American music.
“Perla Batalla is the kind of artist Peter
Gabriel would fall in love with – a Chicana Joni Mitchell, a
gutsier Joan Baez, an idealistic artist.” – Los Angeles Times

Kelly WillIs & Bruce Robison
When is the sum of the parts of a musical
quantity far greater than the whole? When it’s Kelly Willis and
Bruce Robison, now fully united as an ongoing musical act.
Willis is the alluring voice and songwriting talent who
pioneered both Americana and the Texas young country scene with
her 1990 debut Well-Travelled Love, and her breakthrough
hit album What I Deserve hailed by TIME Magazine as “the
smartest, most consistently worthwhile country CD” to have been
released that year. Willis has proven how she can do it all from
contemporary to traditional and beyond with finesse, smarts and
irresistible charm.
Songwriter and performer Bruce Robison has made his biggest mark
on the musical world writing indelible smash #1 hits like
“Wrapped” (George Strait), “Angry All The Time” (Tim McGraw &
Faith Hill) and “Travelin’ Soldier” (Dixie Chicks) while
releasing a series of eight albums rich with his laconic yet
potent grace and emotional dead aim as a writer and singer.
Joined at the heart since they married in 1996, they now meld
their talents and muses here in 2011 to create the sure promise
of even greater and more wonderful things to come, and offer
listeners eternally resonant modern yet rooted country music to
be savored and treasured like a bond of true and abiding love.

badi assad
One of the most exciting Brazilian artists of this generation,
the talent of Badi Assad (Bah-Jee Ah-Sahj) seems to know no
bounds. The extraordinary singer, guitarist, and percussionist
has successfully forged an exhilarating genre of music – a blend
of jazz and worldbeat that melds traditional styles of her
native Brazilian music with an exotic mixture of ethnic sounds
from around the world. With a Bobby McFerrin-like versatility to
her voice and musical heritage that covers the breadth of
Brazilian musical styles, The Los Angeles Times raved
‘Assad redefines solo guitar performance. Revelatory, a
brilliant display of innovation, imagination and skill…almost
hypnotically compelling.” Assad’s 1996 Rhythms was
singled out as one of the most important recordings of the year,
garnering a "Best Classical Guitar Album" from Guitar Player
and "Best Classical/Fingerstyle Guitarist" from Acoustic
Guitar. She joined jazz guitar legends Larry Coryell and
John Abercrombie for the critically acclaimed Three Guitars
album in 2003, and her Wonderland was selected among the
100 best CDs by the BBC.

fourplay
According to some very basic laws of nature,
when powerful forces come together, some form of energy is
created – usually in large amounts. In music, the laws of
interaction are no different. When keyboardist Bob James,
guitarist Chuck Loeb, drummer Harvey Mason and bassist Nathan
East come together as Fourplay, the result is extraordinary
jazz. For two decades, this contemporary jazz quartet has
enjoyed both artistic and commercial success by grafting
elements of R&B, pop and a variety of other sounds to their
unwavering jazz foundations. In the course of a dozen recordings
– six of which have climbed to the top of Billboard’s
Contemporary Jazz Album charts – the supergroup has continued to
explore the limitless dimensions and permutations of jazz while
at the same time appealing to a broad mainstream audience.

leon redbone
One of the more distinct and recognizable
characters in popular music, guitarist Leon Redbone with his
gravelly baritone and signature fedora hat, shades, and mustache
brings a cool mystique to his original folk-jazz mix,
reminiscent of vaudevillian ragtime. His work, a revival of
pre-World War II ragtime, jazz, and blues recalls the work of
performers ranging from Jelly Roll Morton and Bing Crosby to
blackface star Emmett Miller. Redbone made his recording debut
in 1976 with On the Track, which featured legendary jazz
violinist Joe Venuti as well as singer/songwriter Don McLean;
his 1977 follow-up Double Time reached the Billboard Top
40, largely on the strength of his frequent appearances on
television's Saturday Night Live. He has collaborated
with Ringo Starr and Merle Haggard, and such jazz luminaries as
guitarist Frank Vignola, reedman Ken Peplowski, and bassist Jay
Leonhart. Despite his low profile, Redbone has also earned a
certain measure of fame as a fixture in television and movies
including: performing the title tunes for sitcoms Mr. Belvedere
and Harry and the Hendersons, as a snowman in the Will Ferrell
movie Elf, and as the voice of the homespun beer jingle “This
Bud's for You” and the Chevrolet ad jingle “Getting to know
you”.

chuck negron formerly of
three dog night
A founding member of Three Dog Night, the
world was introduced to Chuck Negron and the band in 1969 with
the breakthrough – and the band’s first million seller – “One”
(Is The Loneliest Number). Driven by Negron’s solo lead vocals
on 4 million selling singles, three #1 records (one which topped
the charts for six weeks, Joy To The World), five top 5
hits and seven top 40 hits, the band stayed on the charts for
six years. Negron’s soaring, soulful, four-octave range and
unique vocal styling became a part of the American landscape.
His hits “Easy To Be Hard” and “Old Fashioned Love Song” are now
pop classics. Negron’s unmistakable voice exclaiming “Jeremiah
Was A Bullfrog” on the multi-Grammy nominated and 1971 Record of
the Year Joy To The World is today part of Americana –
securing a place for Negron as one of the great singers in rock
and pop. Negron performs upwards of 70 shows a year and with his
band performs all the hits that made him and Three Dog Night
famous, as well as an exciting repertoire of new songs from his
solo recordings.

huun huur tu
“A musical marvel.”—New York Times
Using traditional instruments and drawing
subtly on 20th-century composers, funky rhythms, and the palette
of electronica, the Tuvan acoustic quartet Huun Huur Tu (HHT)
transform ancient songs into complex acoustic compositions. From
the independent republic of Tuva, bordering Mongolia, HHT
perform an ear-twisting vocal technique called Khöömei
– Tuvan throat singing. In this style, a single vocalist
produces two or three notes simultaneously, often a low drone
along with a high-pitched whistle. Accompanied by traditional
string and percussion instruments, the four-member ensemble
sings rhythmic songs that capture the magic of the Siberian
steppe. The group began touring in the West 17 years ago and
have spent decades innovating indigenous Tuvan music under the
subtle influence of the music of 20th and 21st centuries – the
result is both contemporary music that belongs to the whole
world and a fresh take on the traditional music of Tuva. Since the group's inception, HHT
has collaborated with musicians from many genres, such as Frank
Zappa, Johnny Watson, the Kodo drummers, The Moscow Art Trio,
the Kronos Quartet and The Chieftains. Their most recent
recording Eternal is a collaborative effort with
electronic musician/producer, Carmen Rizzo and accomplished film
score composer Mark Governor. In January 2010, group Hazmat
Modine also announced plans to record with Huun Huur Tu again.
Huun Huur Tu was nominated for a 2008 BBC
World Music Award.

poncho Sanchez Latin jazz band
If music were about pictures, percussionist
Poncho Sanchez’s music would best be described
as a kaleidoscopic swirl of some of the hottest colors and
brightest lights to emerge from either side of the border. At
any given show, on any given record, fragments of Latin jazz,
swing, bebop, salsa and other infectious grooves collide and
churn in a fiery swirl, with results that are no less than
dazzling. Sanchez is considered one of the best Latin Jazz
musicians performing today – his ensemble injects head-nodding
and feet-shuffling energies into the spheres, especially in a
live concert. Sanchez also conveys all of these sounds – and
more – on his latest release, Psychedelic Blues.

The Music of ABBA
Arrival from Sweden
Pop super group ABBA hit the world stage in
1974 and for the next decade dominated the charts with such hits
as “Dancing Queen,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Waterloo,” “SOS,”
“Take a Chance on Me,” “Winner Takes It All”, Voulez-Vous” and
“Fernando.” They disbanded in 1982, but recently, with the hit
Broadway show and movie “Mama Mia,” their music has been
introduced to a whole other generation of fans. With this
resurgence, the ABBA tribute group, Arrival From Sweden,
has become the largest touring ABBA show in the world. This
high-energy group faithfully recreates ABBA’s greatest hits –
from the music and choreography to the costumes and stories
about ABBA – with a full backing band that includes original
ABBA musicians. Arrival is the only show to have exclusive
rights to recreate ABBA’s stage costumes, as well as exclusive
rights from ABBA members to record “Just a Notion”- a previously
unrecorded ABBA track. Arrival have played in more than 35
countries to sold-out houses and international acclaim and has
earned the approval of founding ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and
Benny Andersson.

marty stuart
Country music icon Marty Stuart is best known for his
traditional country music style blended with an eclectic mix of
rockabilly and honky tonk. Since starting out singing gospel as
a child, the bluegrass stint with Lester Flatt in the '70s, the
six years with Johnny Cash in the '80s, and coming up with his
smash "hillbilly rock" hits of the '90s, the now five time
Grammy-winning, platinum recording artist, Grand Ole Opry star,
country music memorabilia preservationist, stylist, designer,
all around renaissance man, and leader of the extraordinary band
The Fabulous Superlatives, Stuart has shown a showman's zest for
every conceivable flavor of country music. Musicologist Peter
North cites, "Marty Stuart…has without question evolved into one
of the most important roots musicians and visionaries in
America." His many hits include “Arlene”, “Hillbilly Rock”,
“Tempted” and “This One’s Gonna Hurt You” – a duet with Travis
Tritt. Stuart has just released his latest, critically
acclaimed, traditional country album, Ghost Train (The Studio
B Sessions) earning him his fifth
Grammy, for the track “Hummingbyrd”, his tribute to the great
Byrd’s guitarist Clarence White.

Red Horse
featuring Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka & Lucy Kaplansky
Celebrating the release of their self-titled
debut album, folk’s newest supergroup Red Horse, featuring Eliza
Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky will perform at One
World Theatre. Together these three veteran songwriters team up
to cover each other’s songs and breathe new life into old
favorites – from Kaplansky’s version of Gilkyson’s “Sanctuary”,
Gorka’s rendition of Kaplansky’s “Don’t Mind Me”, Gilkyson’s
performance of Gorka’s “Forget to Breathe” and many more. Awash
in gorgeous harmonies and simple acoustic production, Red
Horse is the first truly collaborative effort by the trio –
the result being a perfect patchwork of traditional folk and
contemporary Americana. Red Horse’s sparse instrumentation
allows these three wonderful singers to carry the magic of great
songwriting. Eliza Gilkyson, an Austin Music Hall of Fame
inductee and Grammy-nominee has become one of the most respected
musicians in roots, folk and Americana circles. Her album
Beautiful World was hailed as a masterpiece by critics and
named “one of the best folk albums of 2008”. World-renowned
singer/songwriter John Gorka has recorded eleven solo albums;
his latest, So Dark You See, featured the song “Ignorance
& Privilege”, named one of the top folk songs of 2009 by NPR
Music. Singer/songwriter Lucy Kaplansky has been described as “a
truly gifted performer with a bag full of enchanting songs” (New
Yorker Magazine). Two of her seven albums, Ten Year Night
and Every Single Day were awarded Best Pop Album of the
Year by the Association for Independent Music.

stanley jordan
Celebrated guitar virtuoso and three time
Grammy nominee Stanley Jordan has been called one of the
“slickest jazz guitarists around”. His development of the
tapping technique for guitar (which allows the
guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously, like a
piano) has made him legendary in jazz circles. He has
consistently shown himself to be a musical visionary from the
moment he electrified listeners with 1985's gold record Magic
Touch to today with his latest album, State Of Nature.
Jordan's first major release in over a decade, State Of
Nature shines with Jordan’s pioneering techniques, including
simultaneous playing of both guitar and piano. His
writing and playing express and embrace evolution, talent and
change – his own and that of the world around him. Critics say,
“His music is striking, stylish, and commanding. His synthesis
of various styles ensures that his reflection on the ways of
life will resound with fans of all different types of music,
making State of Nature an extraordinary work of great
power and possibility.”

sinbad
Popular comedian and actor
Sinbad entertains audiences with his unique and hilarious ‘hit
‘em in the face’ style of comedy. Sinbad never tells jokes--”I
don’t know any,” he admits--but rather stalks the stage, telling
real-life stories. He doesn’t deliver payoff lines; he
slam-dunks them. His comedy is large, physical, and impetuous.
He pokes holes in our lifestyles, and his stories mirror our
foibles. He doesn’t write his material; he relives it as he
remembers it. Sinbad has
appeared on the FX Television series “It’s Always Sunny in
Philadelphia.” Also, his long awaited stand-up special aired on
Comedy Central this past February and most recently, Sinbad was
seen in the third season of NBC’s Celebrity
Apprentice.

jerry jeff walker
Outlaw country pioneer Jerry Jeff Walker is
most noted for his hit, “Mr. Bojangles,” but it was his smooth
voice and vibrant country songs that earned him a large and
loyal following. Artists like Neil Diamond, Nina Simone, Bob
Dylan and Sammy Davis Jr. have all covered his songs. Walker
became, along with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel, one of
the arbiters of the internationally famous “Austin Music Scene.”
Since then, he has celebrated the music of peers such as Guy
Clark and Townes Van Zandt, and served as a fountainhead and
inspiration to younger musicians such as Robert Earl Keen, Pat
Green, Jack Ingram and Garth Brooks. But even with all that,
Walker still sees the world with a troubadour’s eyes. His songs
are the way he makes the world make sense, how he passes on
stories of the people he meets, the way he feels on a given
morning. He has come full circle, back to his singer-songwriter
roots.

Inarguably one of the greatest living
guitarists in the world and one of the great heroes of modern
flamenco, Paco de Lucía is credited with creating a ‘fusion’
style flamenco influenced by jazz – stretching and embellishing
flamenco’s strict structure but remaining faithful to the soul
of its roots. The most innovative and influential flamenco
artist of the last thirty years, de Lucía’s flamenco recordings
have had a revolutionary impact. His groundbreaking
collaborations with jazz artists such as John McLaughlin, Chick
Corea, Al Di Meola and Larry Coryell, as well as his notable
soundtracks, have brought him worldwide popularity and acclaim.
De Lucía’s compositional genius and the pure intimacy of his
dazzling guitar virtuosity make a deeply authentic and universal
statement that transcends the folkloric. With mesmerizing
cascades of high velocity notes, de Lucía’s performances offer
superb playing, dancing and singing and have been called
‘flamenco fireworks’. "Explosive, percussive, perpetual-motion
concert,” hailed the Chicago Tribune.

Madeleine Peyroux
The smoky-voiced songstress Madeleine Peyroux is known to her
fans for intimately arranged covers of the early American blues
and jazz repertoire – one who’s achieved critical notice and
sales success with her signature “postmodernist coolness” (LA
Times). Peyroux began as a teenage busker, honing her vocal and
guitar skills on the famously quaint, acoustic streets of
Europe, where she molded her style on the cornerstones of jazz:
Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. She is most
known for her 2004 album Careless Love – a major
breakthrough which reached Gold status in the US, selling over
two million copies worldwide and landing on numerous
top-of-the-year lists. Known as a gifted interpreter of material
from the jazz canon to Bob Dylan, her 2006 recording Half the
Perfect World garnered the musician her highest ever chart
position and sales weeks. With her 2009 album Bare Bones,
Peyroux found her voice as a songwriter – The New York Times
noted that Peyroux "has branched out to refine an enigmatic,
low-key personal style that is all her own." She is set to let
that style shine once again in her latest album, Standing on
the Rooftop, due out in June 2011.
